New discoveries are being found and new technologies are being invented in the fight against melanoma every single day. Researchers across the globe are contributing to the massive push in skin cancer prevention and treatment, but the newest gadget is coming from our own backyard. A Miami Health-Tech startup has designed and is in the process of developing a pen-like instrument that can detect cancerous cells on the skin.

The pen, dubbed the DermaSensor, uses Elastic Scattering Spectroscopy which can differentiate cancerous cells in your skin. It also makes use of a type of Artificial Intelligence to learn and better read your skin the more it is used. The DermaSensor is currently going through FDA testing and is expected to be released in Europe first. The device is set to go to clinicians first and eventually the startup hopes to get them into consumer’s hands.
