There are approximately 96,000 volunteer firefighters in New York and now they have cancer coverage. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo passed a law on Sunday establishing health benefits to volunteer firefighters who develop certain cancers. This law will provide firefighters with some much needed peace of mind and give them access to coverage they deserve.
The list of cancers includes lung, lymphatic, breast, neurological, and melanoma cancers, just to name a few. There will be some restrictions, such as the health coverage not being available until January 1st 2019. You also must have at least five years of service and must not have been diagnosed with the cancer before you begin your firefighting service. Even with these conditions, we love to see more steps being taken to help those affected with cancers such as melanoma, especially when its developed while saving the lives of others.
