The common belief that melanoma is most often detected in moles has been contradicted by new studies. According to the study, “only 29 percent of the skin cancers started in moles patients already had, while 71 percent arose as new lesions on the skin.” The study also found that melanomas that form on their own tend to be more aggressive than those associated with moles. The bottom line is that you need to make sure you monitor your whole body for lesions and irregularities. It is also important to visit a dermatologist at least once a year for a complete skin examination. Overall, prevention is key and that starts with keeping yourself covered or use sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher when your exposed to the sun.
