Florida will finally be joining the list of states that allows students to use sunscreen at school. For years sunscreen has been viewed as an over the counter drug similar to Advil and Aspirin by the FDA. Because of this categorization and the concern that some students could potentially have allergic reactions to the sunscreen, schools have required a doctor’s note on file with the nurse’s office before use.

Now, with the passing of the large educational bill in which this sunscreen rule was a part, students will be able to bring their own sunscreen from home for personal use. This will be of great benefit to those students who have fairer skin or who participate in outdoor activities during and after school. We are so happy to report that this very important step has just been taken in the effort to become a Sun Smart Nation!
