SunSmart America™ Schools

Our mission is to save lives through education about the prevention
and early detection of skin cancer, especially melanoma.

The Foundation’s vision is “to educate children throughout the country and give them
the skills necessary to make healthy sun safety choices throughout their lives.”
As the Foundation grows we will continue to advocate for school districts throughout
the country to require sun safety education as part of their curriculum.

Become a SunSmart America™ School

Schools take great care to exercise their duty to ensure that their students are protected against foreseeable harm. Sunburn and skin cancer are foreseeable outcomes of overexposure to the sun.

The damage done to the skin from even one episode of overexposure to the sun can never be fully repaired. Evidence suggests that schools with a sun protection policy implement sun protection practices that better protect their students from harm.

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation has also been recognized as a hazard for people who spend all or part of their working days outside – including teachers. Occupational health and safety regulation requires employers to provide and maintain, as far as practicable, a working environment that is safe and without risks to health. So a SunSmart America™ School Policy should cover activities of staff when on duty.

We encourage all schools to join the Richard David Kann Melanoma Foundation’s SunSmart America™ Schools Program and hope you agree it is in the best interest of both your students and staff that your school has a comprehensive sun safety policy in place.
